Wānanga Kupenga - A Two Day Workshop

Wānanga Kupenga - A Two Day Workshop

Join our local weaver Nick Panapa for this two day wānanga that is designed for intermediate weavers who are ready to deepen their practice. Over the weekend, you will refine your skills in the traditional Kupenga technique, exploring the open-weave (whakapuare) structure and specialised netting knots unique to this art form.

The course also covers practical guidance on structuring your piece, from calculating size and securing the base to shaping loops and mastering the cast-off. We will have shells on hand for decorating, however please do bring your own treasure to add to your masterpiece.

What you'll make: You will complete one kupenga (kete or wall hanging) and begin a second, with Nicks supporting you throughout. You must attend both days.

Cost: $50 per person (18+)

What to bring:

  • 80+ whenu – ideally pre-whiri before class to save time and maximise your weaving.
  • A woven item from home to share your weaving journey with the group on day one.
  • A plate of kai to share for lunch on both days.

Date: 12 & 13 September 2026
Time: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Venue: NGĀ ART, 18 Herschel Street, Ngāruawāhia

(Fees are due at time of registration. If you are unable to pay in full at time of booking please contact us to arrange a payment plan)

As a not-for-profit organisation, NGĀ ART (Te Whare Toi o Ngaaruawaahia) relies on grants, community funding, and donations to keep our classes affordable and accessible for everyone in our community. This programme is generously subsidised thanks to funding support from TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) to assist with literacy and numeracy needs of our participants. You must attend 80% of the classes. At the same time we hope you will learn other useful and interesting skills and have a lot of fun learning with us.
