Fire & Light: Illuminated Clay!

Fire & Light: Illuminated Clay!

Explore the warmth, glow, and atmosphere of fire through clay in this 6-week class. Fire & Light invites you to create functional and sculptural pieces designed to hold, reflect, and interact with flame. From softly glowing lanterns to bold statement candelabras, you’ll learn how to shape light itself through form, texture, and carving.

You’ll experiment with carving techniques to create perforated patterns that cast shadows and ambient light, as well as explore enclosed and open forms for candles, incense, and small flames. Surface treatments and glazing will be used to enhance the way your pieces reflect and diffuse light.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to create hollow and enclosed forms
  • Carving and piercing for illuminated patterns
  • Constructing functional elements like holders, bases, and supports
  • Surface treatments and glazing to enhance glow and reflection

Project ideas may include:

  • Carved luminaries and lanterns
  • Candelabras and candle holders
  • Wall sconces or hanging light shades
  • Incense burners and holders
  • Mini chimineas for tabletop use
  • Ashtrays with sculptural or functional flair
