MASTER CLASS: "Be Somewhere. Feel Some Way. Do Something." w/ Matt Elwell (Second City, iO Chicago)
Could most of your scenes happen anywhere? Do you often just stand and face your partner at center stage or just talk in chairs? Do you get notes about “not finding the ‘Where?’” This workshop uses traditional exercises as well as a healthy dose of scenework to challenge participants to start their scenes with a palpable sense of location and activity.
In this M.U.S.S. Your Improv program, participants will learn techniques to:
- Build a sense of location over the first 30 seconds and use it throughout the scene
- Bond to your location and partner using “neutral motion” activities
- Gain intuition from the space that drives your scene with emotion
Instructor: Matt Elwell has spent the last 25 years in the Chicago and U.S. improv scenes. He built most of his artistic career with ComedySportz, where he worked as a player, teacher, and director. He also taught at Second City and performed with Second City Theatricals and GayCo, in addition to performing at venues including iO, the Playground, WNEP, and Theatre Momentum. Now, he has distilled everything he's learned into a single, coherent system for performing improvisation—comedic or dramatic.
