Map & Compass Fundamentals
The Map & Compass Fundamentals course is the perfect place to learn the basics of field navigation. To start, we will cover the fundamentals of both maps and compasses, including vocabulary, notable features and basic uses. We then will build on these skills throughout the day to learn triangulation, a method for determining one's location. This course covers topics including map interpretation, compass use, declination, triangulation and general backcountry travel. No previous map or compass experience is required, though prior hiking experience is recommended.
This course will be held at the Education Yurts beginning at 9:00am and ending around 3:00pm. Parking is included with this program and is available next to the Yurts. Most of the program will be spent inside the classroom, however we will head outside for a few activities whenever possible. Please be prepared for unpredictable weather. The yurt is heated with a pellet stove, but can be chilly, so please dress warm.
Participants should arrive prepared to learn and bring a writing utensil, lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. Participants should bring their own map and compass if they have them already, however, please note that extra maps and compasses will be provided and available to borrow for the course. Both maps and compasses are available for purchase at the on-site High Peaks Information Center. Please note that no meals or lodging are provided with program registration. For questions about meals and lodging, or to reserve lodging at the Adirondack Loj, please call the Loj Front Desk at (518) 523-3441 or book online. ADK members receive a 10% discount on programs and lodging.
This program will be led by one of ADK's educators, who is a licensed New York State guide and a member of ADK's professional guide staff. Participants ages 12 and up are welcome to attend. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) welcomes people of all backgrounds and is committed to fostering a safe space for everyone to learn.
