American Sign Language (ASL) Fundamentals Class for Adults

American Sign Language is the third most commonly used language in the United States. ASL is a rich, visual language that helps bridge communication between Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing individuals.

This fun and welcoming introductory course is designed for adults ages 18 and older who have no previous ASL experience or only limited knowledge of the language. No prior experience is required—just come ready to learn, connect, and have fun!

Throughout the course, participants will explore fundamental ASL concepts, including:

• The history of American Sign Language
• An introduction to Deaf culture
• The manual alphabet and fingerspelling
• The five parameters of ASL
• Numbers and essential vocabulary
• Family and relationship signs
• Pronouns and question signs
• Facial expressions and other non-manual signals
• Basic conversational phrases
• ASL grammar and sentence structure

Classes will include guided instruction, interactive activities, and opportunities to practice signing with others. By the end of this six-session course, you will have a strong foundation in ASL and will begin building the skills and confidence needed to have a basic conversation with someone who communicates using American Sign Language.

Class Schedule

Classes meet from 7:00–8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays on the following dates:

• August 25
• September 1
• September 8
• September 22
• September 29
• October 6

There will be no class on Tuesday, September 15.

Attendance and Make-Up Class Policy

Because ASL is a language, the skills and concepts taught in this course build upon one another from week to week. Participants should plan to attend all six class sessions to receive the full benefit of the course and avoid missing important foundational instruction.

Make-up classes will not be available for missed sessions. Please carefully review the complete class schedule before registering and make every effort to attend each class.

Certificate of Completion

Participants who attend and complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion recognizing their successful participation in the six-session ASL Fundamentals course.

Course Cost, Materials, and Refund Policy

The cost for the complete six-session course is $125 per person. All required instructional materials are included in the course fee.

Participants are encouraged to bring the following items to each class:

• A folder for organizing class materials
• Paper or a notebook for taking notes
• A pen or pencil

All registration fees are nonrefundable. No refunds will be issued.

About the Venue

Classes will be held at BrownStone Collective, a performance and event venue located in Tyrone, Georgia. This welcoming community space provides a comfortable, in-person environment where participants can interact with the instructor, practice with classmates, and build confidence using American Sign Language.

About the Instructor

Angela Ashworth

Angela Ashworth holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders, with a focus on speech-language pathology and audiology, from the University of Florida. During her time at UF, she was an active member of the Signing Gators Club and volunteered extensively with Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and special-needs individuals.

Angela is fluent in American Sign Language and earned an Advanced Plus rating on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview Rating Scale. She spent 10 years working at the Georgia School for the Deaf, where she held several positions, including speech-language pathologist, ASL interpreter, office manager, accountant, and fundraising coordinator.

Angela currently teaches ASL classes online and in person and works with charter schools, home schools, and the ASL Virtual Academy. The country's preimere online accredited sign language academy providing students with High School and College Credits. She also served as an advisor and committee member for a Georgia Tech project focused on advancing digital ASL education.

A passionate educator and community advocate, Angela promotes ASL and Deaf awareness through schools, recreation departments, senior centers, Scout meetings, community theaters, and other local organizations. She is also the founder of the I Love Learning ASL. (www.ilovelearningasl.com)
