Sunday Pediatric Sports Medicine Intensives provide optional specialty education designed primarily to support the OSS Sports Residency Program, the Athletic Training Program and clinicians interested in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine following the same competencies as above as they relate to Pediatric Sports Medicine. These sessions reinforce Olympic Sports & Spine's commitment to strengthening relationships with regional sports medicine providers, orthopedic specialists, and our athletic trainers serving local middle schools and high schools. Educational content emphasizes youth athlete evaluation, injury prevention, rehabilitation, return-to-sport decision-making, and performance considerations unique to pediatric populations.

Clinical Knowledge Questions

By the end of the lab session, the participant will be able to answer and discuss the following:

    1. Explain the differential diagnosis of pediatric sports-related injuries utilizing common illness scripts, including differentiation of growth plate injuries, apophyseal injuries, overuse conditions, stress injuries, and acute traumatic injuries
    2. Explain indications, precautions, and contraindications for interventions in pediatric athletes, including considerations related to skeletal immaturity, tissue healing, and training age.
    3. Explain the role of sport-specific mechanics, growth and development, training loads, and the kinetic chain in the development and treatment of pediatric sports injuries.
    4. Describe modification of interventions based on symptom irritability, tissue healing stage, growth-related considerations, training demands, and patient response to treatment.
    5. Describe appropriate exercise dosing, workload management, return-to-sport progression, and functional activity interventions for pediatric and adolescent athletes.

Skills Lab

By the end of the lab session, the participant will be able to demonstrate:

Skills
Focused pediatric upper extremity examination with appropriate differential diagnosis
Assessment of scapular mechanics and kinetic chain contributions to upper extremity dysfunction in a pediatric overhead athlete
Pediatric upper extremity manual therapy and mobility interventions with appropriate growth plate considerations
Upper extremity taping techniques for pediatric and adolescent athletes
Exercise progressions for pediatric overhead athletes
Return-to-throw progression and workload management principles
Athlete and parent education regarding injury prevention, pitch counts, activity modification, and home program progression
Considerations of physical agents and pain management for pediatric sports athletes

**Although participation is optional for most clinicians, Sports Residents are required to attend. Athletic Trainers and clinicians pursuing the Pediatric Sports Medicine Specialty Track are strongly encouraged to participate and priority registration will be afforded to these clinicians based on class size**
