Basic Pistol Fundamentals — USCCA Certified Course
Never held a handgun before? This is where you start — safely, correctly, and without judgment.
This USCCA instructor-led course is an excellent starting point for new handgun owners, beginning shooters, or anyone who wants to build a strong foundation in safe and responsible pistol handling. You'll leave with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to own and use a handgun safely and confidently — not just steps to memorize, but the understanding behind them.
Every skill, taught three ways:
- What you're learning
- Why it matters to your safety and success
- How to do it correctly and with confidence
How we teach:
- Every skill starts with the purpose and the standard, so you know exactly what "correct" looks like before you try it — not after.
- We demonstrate it first, broken into clear steps, so you're copying something you actually understood.
- You practice it. We watch closely and correct the most important thing first — never a pile of nitpicks at once.
- Feedback is specific and honest: what you did right, what needs to change and why, and a chance to show us you've got it — not just told you've got it.
- We don't move on until you can demonstrate it correctly. Confidence built on a real standard, not just encouragement.
What you'll learn:
- Universal rules of safe gun handling
- Handgun parts, actions, and operation
- Safe loading, unloading, and handling procedures
- Ammunition components, identification, storage, and common malfunctions
- Fundamentals of pistol shooting: grip, stance, sight alignment, hold and breath control, trigger control and follow-through
- Basic considerations for selecting a handgun
- Proper cleaning and maintenance
- Responsible ownership and key legal considerations
- Your next steps for continued training and skill development
Hands-on and performance-based. This isn't a lecture you sit through — you'll demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills taught, progressing from classroom instruction into live-fire exercises on the range.
Who should attend:
- First-time handgun owners
- New or inexperienced shooters
- Anyone considering buying their first handgun
- Shooters who learned informally and want formal instruction in the fundamentals
