Writing the Subversive Rom-Com
Writing the Subversive Rom-Com (5-week course)
*NEW DATES!*
Sat, SEPT 19 - Sat, OCT 17
12 - 2pm PT / 3 - 5pm ET
(All levels)
In this 5-week course, we’ll scrutinize a delightfully problematic genre—the popcorn-worthy AND curse-worthy “Rom-Com”—then embark on our own original/subversive rom-com scripts! This workshop is equal parts source text study and wild writing: unbraiding commercial rom-com scenes, then rewriting them per our experience as *actual human women*! Our approach still allows for the genre’s dependable joys, but finds all-new writerly freedom in subverting tropes and reimagining this genre front to back—with laughs based in truth and fearless play.
Queer love, anyone!? Women who are unflappable!? Men who don’t disappoint?
Together, we take a clear-eyed look at the commercial limitations that have historically flattened what’s possible for romance in our films—and through cultural osmosis, our lives! In the process, we’ll find our own way as writers towards a version of on-screen love that doesn't shackle us to our culture’s worst and most sexist prescriptions! We're doing no less than reimagining love here! Come with an original script idea, or none at all!
