This beginner-friendly course includes six two-hour classes and provides plenty of hands-on practice in both tool sharpening and woodturning. No prior turning experience is required.
What You’ll Learn
- Essential shop and lathe safety
- How to harvest a tree and process its wood for turning
- Proper wood storage techniques
- Spindle turning and faceplate turning
- How to make a center-finding jig
- How to use chucks and faceplates
- Sanding and finishing techniques
- Principles of design and form, emphasized throughout the course
Tools Needed
Please bring a spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge, bowl gouge, skew chisel, parting tool, and bowl scraper. Harbor Freight offers two starter sets: the lower-priced set has shorter handles and tempered-steel tools, while the higher-priced set offers high-speed steel and may be a better long-term choice.
