Parent & Child: Catapult

Launch into the fun world of engineering and woodworking! In this exciting hands-on project, young makers will design, build, and test their very own wooden catapult. Combining fundamental woodworking skills with classical physics, students will transform raw lumber into a working desktop launcher capable of launching soft projectiles across the room.

Participants will learn how to measure, cut, assemble, and tension their build for maximum distance and accuracy. It’s the perfect project for curious minds who love hands-on building, a touch of history, and friendly competition!

What You'll Learn

This dynamic project introduces core woodworking concepts through the lens of mechanical design. Here are just a few of the things we'll cover in our session:

  • How to accurately measure, mark, and square stock for sturdy frame construction
  • Methods for drilling clean pilot holes and countersinking to secure moving joints
  • Safe techniques for using hand and power tools to shape structural components
  • Understanding mechanical advantage, leverage, and tensioning systems (using rubber bands or cordage)
  • Sanding and finishing techniques for smooth, safe operation
  • Testing, calibrating, and troubleshooting designs for distance and accuracy

Take these core skills home to build future STEM projects, wooden toys, and creative mechanical contraptions!

Tools Used

We've got a shop full of great tools we're excited to share with you. You'll learn to safely use the following tools during our class:
