Saratoga Joinery

In this hands-on youth woodworking class, students will learn the fundamentals of woodturning by using a wood lathe to create a custom ice cream scoop handle and a wooden yo-yo.

What You'll Learn

Students will practice proper lathe operation, tool handling, shaping, sanding, and finishing techniques while learning important shop safety skills. This fun and creative project gives students the opportunity to develop their confidence and craftsmanship while turning a simple piece of wood into two unique, functional projects.

Skill Level & Prerequisites

Beginner to Intermediate

You’re a middle school student (ages 12 - 14). This hands-on course introduces students to the fundamentals of woodturning, safety, and pen design. Students learn to safely operate the lathe while transforming raw lumber into functional, beautiful ice cream scoop and yo-yo. We provide an inclusive, hands-on environment where participants of all skill levels can learn, share, and build both projects and lasting community.

You are interested in the craft, but haven’t been in the shop yet. You’ve made a few things before, but want to up your game with a new project and some additional skills. No prior knowledge or experience necessary!

Ages 12 - 14; minors are required to be accompanied by an adult.

Schedule

One, 1 1/2 hour session

Safety

PPE: We provide safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust masks if requested. Safety glasses are required in the shop at all times.

Dress: We’re probably going to get a little dusty! Make sure to wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Avoid loose clothing and jewelry. Anything that may get caught in machinery, like long hair, must be tied back and secured.

Accommodations: While we’ll be moving about the shop for most of our time together, we aim to make the craft as accessible as possible for everyone. Please reach out if you have any questions about our space or may need accommodations of any kind.

What to Bring

A water bottle to stay hydrated.

All tools, materials, safety gear, and supplies are provided!

Instructor Bio

Preston Sweeney is a middle school engineering/technical trades teacher at Maple Avenue Middle School. He is grateful to be a part of the Saratoga Joinery team and excited for the opportunities the organization will offer people to gain experience in the world of woodworking. Preston has a true passion for all things woodworking as well as collecting vintage tools.
