Blacksmithing 101 is a hands-on class designed to introduce you to the basic techniques, tools, terminology, and processes used in blacksmithing. The class is approximately 10% theory and 90% hands-on learning, which means we’ll spend very little time chatting and a lot of time hitting hot metal!

This class also makes a unique and memorable team-building experience. Blacksmithing encourages participants to communicate, collaborate, problem-solve, and support one another while learning a new skill outside of their normal work environment. Team members will have opportunities to work alongside each other, share tools and techniques, overcome challenges, and celebrate each other’s progress. The experience creates a relaxed environment where people can build stronger connections while accomplishing something tangible together.

Because blacksmithing is new to most participants, everyone starts on relatively equal footing. This helps break down workplace roles and gives team members a chance to see one another’s strengths in a different setting. Patience, encouragement, adaptability, and teamwork all become part of the experience. At the end of the day, participants not only leave with something they forged themselves, but also with a shared experience and plenty of stories to take back to the workplace.

We provide all required safety gear, but if you have your own, you are more than welcome to bring it.

The class begins at 8:30 a.m., and we will break around 12:00 p.m. for lunch. Our goal is for each participant to complete a few simple projects or, depending on the class and available time, a paracord-wrapped knife by the end of the day.

Blacksmithing is physical work, so we recommend hydrating well the day before class and bringing plenty of water—you will break a sweat!

Important clothing requirements:
NO SHORTS. Please wear jeans or sturdy work pants and closed-toe leather shoes or work boots.
