Arts Experience at Loyalist

Course Overview:

Gouache is a water-based medium similar to watercolour, but with a little more punch. Used by artists for centuries, from manuscript artists as early as the 1500s to Impressionist painters such as Cézanne and Van Gogh, it was later embraced by designers, illustrators, poster artists and animators. Today, gouache has made a vibrant comeback. Gouache dries quickly to a smooth, matte finish and is both portable and brilliantly opaque. It works beautifully for fine details and landscapes, making it a versatile medium for travel sketching or studio work.

In this workshop, you’ll explore gouache’s unique properties, including painting light over dark, layering to create solid blocks of colour and combining watercolour passages with gouache. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, you’ll create colourful landscapes using provided reference photos or your own images.

This workshop is ideal for beginner and intermediate painters and is also a great opportunity for experienced artists to add a new medium to their creative toolkit. Many of the techniques explored can also be applied to acrylic, oil and traditional watercolour painting.

All supplies will be provided for a materials fee. Pack your sense of adventure and fun and get ready to explore this vibrant and versatile medium!

Skill Level: Beginner and Intermediate. Demonstrations and step-by-step instruction will be provided.

• All materials are provided. HST is not included in the price.
• Material fee of $26.00 is included in the price.
• This course takes place at the Belleville Campus: 376 Wallbridge Loyalist Rd, Belleville, ON K8N 5B9
• Campus information, including room number, parking, directions, etc., will be provided closer to the start date.
• A refund (less $20.00 administrative fee) will be issued if you withdraw from a class seven days before the start date of the class. After this deadline, no refunds will be issued.
• If a course is cancelled by Loyalist College, registered students will be provided with a full refund. College decisions to cancel a course will be made seven days before the class start date.
