Arts Experience at Loyalist

Course Overview: A dynamic, well-executed portrait goes beyond capturing a literal likeness. It can reveal a subject's inner essence from the artist’s point of view or create a compelling, expressive representation. In this workshop, Andrew Sookrah will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating a portrait in acrylic. Beginning with the basic structure of the human face, you’ll explore proportion and the interconnected relationships of facial features before developing a likeness and bringing your portrait to life through colour, tone and expressive brushwork.

Andrew will demonstrate how light can be used to define form and colour, along with techniques for colour mixing, glazing and effective brushwork. You’ll explore dramatic tonal values, shifts in colour temperature and loose, expressive brushstrokes to move beyond a literal representation and develop a portrait that reflects your own creative style. Andrew will work from a portrait image during his demonstrations. Participants are also welcome to bring a printed image of a subject they would like to paint, such as a family member, celebrity, pet or self-portrait. Throughout the day, Andrew will provide three demonstrations as well as individual guidance to help you expand your range of expressive brushstrokes, explore vibrant colour and develop effective ways to define shape and form in portraiture.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or experienced acrylic painter, you’ll be guided through a supportive painting process that builds on foundational skills while allowing room for individual expression and experimentation.

• Workshop price: $105.00. HST is not included in the price.
• This course takes place at the Port Hope Campus: 10 Pine St S, Port Hope, ON L1A 3E7
• Campus information, including room number, parking, directions, etc., will be provided closer to the start date.
• A refund (less $20.00 administrative fee) will be issued if you withdraw from a class 7 days before the start date of the class. After this deadline, no refunds will be issued.
• If a course is cancelled by Loyalist College, registered students will be provided with a full refund. College decisions to cancel a course will be made 7 days before the class start date.
