Alternative Firing: Obvara, Cobalt Sulphate & Pit Firing

Join a Fire & Form class and explore the exciting world of alternative firing! Participate in a variety of firing while experimenting with a variety of methods, including Obvara, Cobalt & Salt, and Pit Firing. Discover the rich textures and striking crackle effects of the Obvara method. Experiment with surface decoration techniques using cobalt and salt as well as burnishing with terra sigillata for interesting finishes.

Students will need to bring 2-4 pieces of their own bisqueware for raku made of high fire clay, cone 6-10 raku or white stoneware. 

Please Note: Students will need to apply and burnish their pieces with terra sigillata during open studio hours ahead of time. Instructions will be at the Studio: Apply 2-3 coats to bone dry greenware, burnishing between coats, then bisque fire.

Obvara Method: provide 1 bisqued piece-Terra Sigillata is optional
Cobalt Sulphite: 1 Bisqued piece with Terra Sigillata
Pit Firing Method: 1 Bisqued piece with Terra Sigillata

Size Limit: Please bring small-to medium-sized pieces, approximately the size of a mug or bowl. Pieces should be no larger than 6–7 inches in height or width.
