Emergency Edge First Aid

Emergency Child Care First Aid with CPR-B/AED is a one-day Canadian Red Cross course designed for people who care for babies and children. It provides the practical skills needed to prevent injuries, recognize emergencies, and respond confidently when a child or baby becomes ill or injured.

This course is suitable for early childhood educators, daycare staff, preschool employees, support workers, recreation staff, parents, and others responsible for the safety of children. Child care first aid requirements vary by role and workplace, so participants should confirm the required course with their employer or licensing authority before registering.

Training is hands-on and scenario-based, with an emphasis on recognizing when something is wrong, making effective decisions, and providing appropriate care until emergency services arrive.

What You Will Learn

During this course, you will learn how to:

• Prevent injuries and create safer environments for children
• Recognize and respond to emergencies using the Check–Call–Care approach
• Assess an ill or injured child or baby
• Respond to choking in children and babies
• Perform CPR on children and babies
• Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on pediatric patients
• Recognize and respond to breathing emergencies, including asthma and anaphylaxis
• Control severe bleeding and care for wounds
• Respond to common childhood illnesses and medical emergencies
• Care for head, neck, spinal, bone, muscle, and joint injuries
• Recognize and respond to environmental emergencies
  

Please note that CPR-B focuses on children and babies and does not include adult CPR certification. Participants who also require adult CPR should consider a course that includes CPR-C, or may have to take CPR-C/AED as a supplement to this course.

Physical Participation Requirements:

This is a practical course. Participants will be required to kneel, lie on the floor, and demonstrate first aid skills during training and evaluation. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and protects your knees; shorts are not recommended.

Successful completion of the CPR component requires participants to demonstrate effective chest compressions continuously for at least two minutes.

If a disability, injury, or other limitation may affect your participation, please contact us before booking so that we can discuss possible accommodations. Certification can only be issued when all required knowledge and practical performance criteria have been successfully demonstrated.

Completion Requirements

Attendance alone does not guarantee certification. To receive certification, participants must:

• Attend and participate in 100% of the course
• Successfully demonstrate all required practical skills
• Achieve at least 75% on the independently completed, closed-book knowledge evaluation
• Follow the Canadian Red Cross Fundamental Principles and expected standards of conduct
  

Certificates are issued electronically by the Canadian Red Cross following successful course completion.

We are confident that our practical, supportive training will prepare you to succeed. If you complete the full course but do not meet all certification requirements, you may return to repeat the outstanding assessment components once, free of charge.

Reassessment must be completed within 30 days of the original course date and arranged with Emergency Edge in advance. This guarantee does not apply to missed training, late arrival, refusal to participate, or removal from the course.

Learning Support and Accommodations

We want learners to be assessed on their first aid knowledge and skills, not disadvantaged by literacy difficulties, a learning disability, or because English is an additional language. 

If you may need learning support, please contact Emergency Edge before the course so that we can discuss appropriate accommodations confidentially. Depending on your needs and the requirements of the course, support may include additional explanation, clarification of unfamiliar language, or completing the knowledge evaluation verbally and individually with the instructor.

Courses are delivered in English. Participants must be able to understand safety instructions, communicate during practical activities, and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills. Accommodations can change how information or assessments are presented but cannot remove or alter Canadian Red Cross certification requirements.

Manuals, Food and Refreshments

Canadian Red Cross manuals will be available for reference during the course, and participants will receive access to digital course materials. Printed manuals to take home may be purchased for $10 and must be added to your booking before checkout.

Food and beverages are not provided. Please bring or arrange your own lunch, drinks, and refreshments.
