Emergency Edge First Aid

Canadian red Cross Standard Child Care First Aid with CPR-C/AED is a comprehensive two-day Canadian Red Cross course for people who care for babies and children. It combines pediatric emergency response with a broader range of first aid skills for injuries, illnesses, and emergencies involving children and babies.

This course is suitable for early childhood educators, daycare and preschool staff, support workers, recreation staff, teachers, foster caregivers, and others responsible for children’s health and safety. It provides more extensive training than the one-day Emergency Child Care First Aid course, making it appropriate for participants whose employment, licensing requirements, or responsibilities call for a higher level of first aid training.

Child care first aid requirements vary by role and workplace. Participants should confirm the required certification with their employer or licensing authority before registering.

Training is hands-on and scenario-based, with an emphasis on injury prevention, practical skills, sound decision-making, and providing effective care until emergency services arrive.

What You Will Learn

During this course, you will learn how to:

• Prevent injuries and create safer environments for children
• Recognize and respond to emergencies using the Check–Call–Care approach
• Assess an ill or injured child or baby
• Respond to choking in children and babies
• Perform CPR on children and babies
• Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• Recognize and respond to breathing and circulation emergencies
• Provide care for asthma, anaphylaxis, and other medical emergencies
• Control severe bleeding and care for wounds
• Recognize and respond to head, neck, and spinal injuries
• Care for bone, muscle, and joint injuries
• Respond to environmental emergencies, including heat- and cold-related illness
• Recognize signs of poisoning and provide appropriate care
• Respond to sudden illnesses and changes in a child’s condition

No previous first aid training or experience is required.

Completion Requirements

Attendance alone does not guarantee certification. To receive certification, participants must:

• Attend and participate in 100% of the course
• Successfully demonstrate all required practical skills
• Achieve at least 75% on the independently completed, closed-book knowledge evaluation
• Follow the Canadian Red Cross Fundamental Principles and expected standards of conduct

Certificates are issued electronically by the Canadian Red Cross following successful course completion.

We are confident that our practical, supportive training will prepare you to succeed. If you complete the full course but do not meet all certification requirements, you may return to repeat the outstanding assessment components once, free of charge.

Reassessment must be completed within 30 days of the original course commencement date and arranged with Emergency Edge in advance. This guarantee does not apply to missed training, late arrival, refusal to participate, or removal from the course.

Important Attendance Information

Participants must attend and participate in both full days of training. Late arrivals cannot be admitted because all required course content and instructional hours must be completed. Anyone arriving after instruction has begun will be turned away and will not receive a refund.

Physical Participation Requirements

This is a practical course. Participants will be required to kneel, lie on the floor, and demonstrate first aid skills during training and evaluation. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and protects your knees; shorts are not recommended.

Successful completion of the CPR component requires participants to demonstrate effective chest compressions continuously two for a minimum two minutes on each type of patient included in the course.

Please note that certification can only be issued when all required knowledge and practical performance criteria have been successfully demonstrated, therefore it may not always be possible to accommodate you.

Please be realistic about whether you are physically capable of performing the required skills when choosing to book your First Aid training.

Learning Support and Accommodations

We want learners to be assessed on their first aid knowledge and skills—not disadvantaged by literacy difficulties, a learning disability, or because English is an additional language.

Depending on your needs and the requirements of the course, support may include additional explanation, clarification of unfamiliar language, or completing the knowledge evaluation verbally and individually with the instructor.

Courses are delivered in English. Participants must be able to understand safety instructions, communicate during practical activities, and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills.

Accommodations can change how information or assessments are presented but cannot remove or alter Canadian Red Cross certification requirements.

Manuals, Food and Refreshments

Canadian Red Cross manuals will be available for reference during the course, and participants will receive access to digital course materials. Printed manuals to take home may be purchased for $10 and must be added to your booking before checkout.

Food and beverages are not provided. Please bring or arrange your own lunch, drinks, and refreshments for both days.
