Introduction to Firearms (incl. live fire at range)

This class is a basic introduction to firearms that assumes no prior knowledge. It is good for those who are considering firearm ownership or those who want to understand how to navigate around firearms safely.

We will have approximately 3.5 hours of classroom instruction, then we'll be driving to a shooting range in the suburbs for live fire practice. If you need a ride, please include that info in the notes field during registration. Timeliness is important - please show up at 12:15pm to sign papers, so we can begin class by 12:30pm. We want to be on the range by 4:30pm to ensure we have a full hour for everyone to shoot.

Topics we will cover include:

  • Firearms and parts
  • Safely loading and unloading
  • Safely operating and shooting
  • Basics of marksmanship
  • Overview of firearms laws
  • Live fire practice

Please review all of our policies on our Policy Page, and be prepared to sign a waiver once you arrive to class. The class fees include range fees, targets, instruction, and use of up to 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition on the range. I will have 9mm handguns available for use during class. If you bring your own gun and it is not 9mm, please bring ammunition or be prepared to purchase it at the range.

Great introduction to firearms. From a total novice with no experience, it was a good survey of safe gun handling, with recommendations for more learning.

A well structured and very informational class session followed by an incredibly safe and productive range session. Couldn’t have asked for a more positive introduction to handguns/firearms!

Fantastic. I found it all so helpful: the videos, knowing and naming the parts of the firearm, the practice with the demonstration models. I also liked the order, flow and pacing of the presentation. I think a ten-minute break in the middle would be a useful addition if time allows. I think you can also tell first-time shooters that the range is going to be way louder than you would expect (it was for me). Thank you, Jim!
