Oil Painting For Beginners: Part 2

Oil Painting for Beginners: Part 2

6 Tuesdays | Dec 15, 22, 29, Jan 5, 12, & 19 | 2-4 PM

This class, led by instructor Clair F. Maier (BA in Studio Art, Saint Vincent College), is designed for students who have already taken Clair's beginner class in oil painting or have some prior experience in oils. Totally new to the medium? See our other offerings.

Class time will range from instruction and brief exercises to sessions of working on individual projects. This course has many different projects, including a color wheel and palette chart, that will require some work at home in order to complete them. Please note that this is not a "paint and sip" experience--this is an intensive 6-week course designed to expand your knowledge of oil painting. The focus will be on learning a new skill rather than completing a painting during the 6-week session.

Instructor Clair F. Maier will continue expanding your oil painting technique, touching on:

  • Prepping a canvas with gesso
  • Framing tools and techniques
  • Creating a signature
  • Varnishing finished works
  • Creating a color wheel
  • Tightening a loose canvas
  • Creating a palette values chart
  • Working small vs. large

Clair will also continue the previous course's discussion of:

  • Working with painting mediums
  • Creating an underpainting
  • Layering wet and dry paint
  • Proper brush cleaning and maintenance
  • Value, color, composition, and color temperature

Please bring:

  • Two reference photos: one for a 16 x 20" painting, and one for a 4x4" painting. Kindly email your top 3 choices (for each) to Clair (cfsirofchuck@gmail.com) by Dec. 7 so she can approve them.
  • ALL materials (paints, brushes, palette knives, etc.) provided in "Oil Painting for Beginners"/all of their oil painting supplies except for an easel.
  • Your completed painting from "Oil Painting for Beginners" if you would like to varnish it in class

We'll provide classroom basics like paper towel, turpenoid, baby wipes, disposable palettes, brush conditioner, and linseed oil, as well as varnish and gesso. We'll also add several exciting new materials to your personal collection!

Some experience in drawing is helpful, but not required. Come ready to learn and open to a new experience! Ages 18 and up. (Ages 14 and up are welcome when accompanied by a parent or supervising adult.)

Please Note:

  • Tuition is due with registration unless other arrangements are made. If you cancel 0-7 days before the class start date, we are able to refund your tuition ONLY if we can fill your space from our waitlist. We are not able to issue partial refunds or transfer your registration to another class. We apologize for any inconvenience, but we cannot refund your tuition once you have started the classes.
  • Oil Painting is a messy business! Please bring an apron or wear work clothes and closed shoes that can get dirty. Oil paints do not come out!
  • Bring a hair tie if you have long hair.
  • Leave your rings, smartwatches, and jewelry at home. Main Exhibit Gallery & Art Center is not responsible for lost or damaged personal items.
