Apple Witch Doll Workshop (Family)
Led by local artist and educator, Bregan Ford, in partnership with Blanco River Academy, this open air workshop is part of a nature-focused series designed to teach participants the importance of creating with consideration to the environmental impact of materials and techniques. This project is a fun way to use seasonal produce to introduce beginner carving and sculpting skills, resulting in unique holiday decorations.
What are apple dolls?
Apple dolls originated in North America among Indigenous groups and the technique was later adopted as a folk art tradition. Apples are carved and dehydrated over several days to create a preserved, wrinkled doll face; bodies are fashioned from wire and scraps of fabric. The art form is fun, a little bit creepy, and perfectly reimagined as witches.
Recommended ages.
This workshop is designed for families with children 8 years old and up. Each registration must include at least one parent of guardian 18 years or older.
What's included?
Registration for this hands on 2 hour workshop includes all materials and instruction necessary for each participant pair to complete one apple witch doll. One additional family member and/or project materials for one additional witch may be added during registration within the Available Add-ons section.
What to expect.
Participants will receive a relaxed overview of the process, including discussion and exploration, before beginning their piece(s). Participants will then use potato peelers and pumpkin carving tools to create their witch heads followed by wire and fabric scraps to create their witch bodies. Over the following days, they'll watch their creations shrink into creepy wrinkled masterpieces.
This event takes place rain or shine on the Blanco River Academy campus under its covered pavilion.
