A few months before the Declaration of Independence, Abigail Adams urged her husband to “Remember the ladies!” (He didn’t.) But in the Moravian community at Bethlehem in 1776, women enjoyed the sorts of opportunities that Abigail Adams wished for. We will explore this by looking at the life of Mary Penry, who described herself as a “Great Politician.” Penry remained single her entire life—a rare opportunity in early America that Moravian communities offered to Moravian women.
