🗺️ Why the Enhanced License Is Worth One Sunday

Idaho lets you carry without a permit. So why take a class? Because the Enhanced license does things permitless carry and the standard license can’t:

• Travel armed in 39 states. The standard Idaho license is honored in roughly 25. The Enhanced license adds states like Washington, Nevada, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin that only recognize the Enhanced version. If you drive to Spokane, you already need this.
• Carry on Idaho public college and university campuses. Not allowed under permitless or standard carry. (Dorms and posted facilities are still restricted.)
• Buy a firearm from an Idaho dealer without the background-check wait. An Idaho concealed weapons license is a federally recognized alternative to the NICS check at the counter.
• Know exactly where the legal lines are. Most people who carry every day have never had Idaho’s use-of-force law explained by someone who has actually applied it. You will.
• Good for 5 years. One Sunday covers you for the next five.

This is USCCA’s Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals curriculum — the course more than 1 million Americans have taken — with Idaho-specific law added.

🧰 What to Bring

Each student must bring the following:

• One modern-day firearm (example: Glock 17 or Glock 19)
• Several magazines (3+) (capacity for firing 30 rounds per relay). They do not need to arrive loaded
• Revolver shooters: speed-loaders. A revolver loaded one round at a time cannot keep pace with the class
• At least 100 rounds of factory ammunition in your handgun’s caliber
• Eye protection
• Ear protection (electronic recommended) To hear range commands
• Note-taking materials — Digital class notes ware available for purchase at registration
• Baseball cap (recommended), water and weather-appropriate clothing
• A positive attitude

❗ The magazines, speedloaders and ammunition above are requirements, not suggestions. You will confirm each one at registration. The class runs on a tight schedule and everyone moves through the range portion together, so a student who arrives without the required equipment will not pass and will need to reschedule and retake the class.

❗ IMPORTANT — Arrival & Gate Access

The class is held in the Fernan Rod & Gun Club classroom in the main building, 11600 Fernan Lake Rd, Coeur d’Alene, ID.

Please plan to arrive early. The facility gates run on an automatic schedule:

• Gates open at 9:00 AM
• Gates close promptly at 9:20 AM

You must arrive and enter the facility before the gates close. Late arrivals will not be admitted, so allow extra time for travel and for finding the entrance.

Directions from Sherman Ave (Coeur d’Alene):

• Head east on Sherman Ave toward the eastern end of downtown
• Continue as Sherman Ave turns into Fernan Lake Rd
• Continue on Fernan Lake Rd for about 3–4 miles
• The Fernan Rod & Gun Club entrance will be on your right
• Proceed through the gate and follow the road to the larger parking lot by the main building

Note that GPS directions may not bring you to the correct entrance, so review these directions in advance.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior experience? Yes. You need to be able to safely handle and operate the handgun you will be using in class. If you have never handled a firearm before, take Pistol Essentials first.

I’m nervous about the range portion. Is that normal? Very. Range time is 1 to 2 hours at a pace set for a certification class, not a competition. The goal is to confirm safe handling and basic accuracy — nobody is timed against anyone else.

What handgun should I bring? A modern-day handgun is recommended — for example, a Glock 17 or Glock 19 — one that is reliable, serviceable and that you can shoot comfortably.

How do I get the Enhanced License after class? You will leave with your signed Idaho training form. Take it to your county sheriff’s office with your application; they handle fingerprinting and the background check and issue the license. The license is valid for 5 years.

I already carry permitless or have the standard license. Is this worth it? If you ever cross into Washington or travel out of state, yes. The Enhanced license is honored in 39 states versus roughly 25 for the standard license, and it is the only way to carry on Idaho public college campuses.

What if I sign up and can’t make it? More than 14 days before class: full refund. 14 to 5 days before: full credit toward a future Make Ready class. Within 5 days or a no-show: no refund or credit. Emergencies happen — call or text before class and we will do our best to help.

What is the next step after this class? Pistol Essentials, then Next Level Pistol, then Real World Scenarios. The license proves you met the standard; those classes build the skill behind it.
