The Basic Narcotics Investigations Course provides new and beginning narcotics investigators, police officers, correctional officers, and other public-safety professionals with a practical foundation in the identification, investigation, and disruption of illegal drug activity.

Designed for personnel with limited or no previous narcotics-investigation experience, this course introduces participants to the major functions of a narcotics investigator and the fundamental investigative techniques used to identify drug traffickers, develop intelligence, build criminal cases, and support successful enforcement operations.

Instruction emphasizes the progression of a narcotics investigation—from the initial receipt of information through investigative development, enforcement action, evidence handling, and case preparation. • Undercover Operations Awareness — Fundamental concepts associated with controlled purchases and undercover operations, including planning, communication, safety, and investigative responsibilities.
• Search and Seizure Considerations — Foundational Fourth Amendment principles related to narcotics enforcement, including probable cause, consent searches, search warrants, and vehicle and residence investigations.
• Interviewing and Interrogation Fundamentals — Basic techniques for interviewing suspects, witnesses, and cooperating individuals while gathering actionable information.
• Evidence Collection and Documentation — Proper recognition, handling, documentation, preservation, and chain of custody of narcotics-related evidence.
• Drug Trafficking Organizations — Understanding the basic structure and methods of drug trafficking organizations and identifying opportunities to expand an investigation beyond street-level enforcement.
• Officer Safety and Operational Planning — Recognizing the elevated risks associated with narcotics enforcement and applying sound planning, communication, deconfliction, and safety practices.
• Case Development and Report Writing — Organizing investigative information, preparing reports, documenting probable cause, and building a case for prosecution.
