Course Overview: A specialized officer-survival program designed to prepare law enforcement professionals and their families to respond effectively when an off-duty officer unexpectedly encounters a violent criminal act, active shooter, or terrorist incident.

Law enforcement officers are never completely “off duty.” Whether shopping with family, attending a public event, traveling, dining at a restaurant, or simply going about everyday life, an officer may unexpectedly encounter a critical incident requiring immediate decisions.

The Officer Survival & Family Preparedness for Criminal, Active Shooter and Terrorist Incidents Course provides certified, sworn, and currently employed law enforcement personnel with practical strategies for recognizing, preparing for, and responding to violent incidents while off duty, whether armed or unarmed and whether accompanied by family members.

A central focus of the course is family preparedness. Participants learn strategies for discussing potential emergencies with spouses, children, and other family members before an incident occurs. Instruction emphasizes developing simple family response plans, communication strategies, rally points, and expectations regarding what family members should do if the officer is compelled to take law-enforcement action.

The course examines off-duty response considerations associated with robberies, active-shooter incidents, and terrorist attacks, including situational awareness, threat recognition, decision-making, concealed-carry considerations, identification as an off-duty officer, interaction with responding law enforcement, and personal and family survival priorities.

Participants also receive an overview of active-shooter incidents and terrorism, including historical trends, terrorist organizations, tactics, objectives, methodologies, and lessons learned from previous incidents.

Course Delivery Options

The course can be delivered in three formats to meet agency training needs:

4-Hour Course — Classroom Only
Concentrated instruction covering off-duty survival, situational awareness, family preparedness, active-shooter response, terrorism awareness, and critical-incident decision-making.

8-Hour Course — Classroom & Range
Expands classroom instruction with practical firearms familiarization and live-fire training designed to reinforce safe weapons handling and decision-making within the approved training environment.

16-Hour Course — Classroom, Range & Scenario-Based Training
The comprehensive two-day program combines classroom instruction, range training, supervised familiarization with multiple approved weapon systems, and controlled shoot-house scenarios designed to reinforce judgment, communication, threat recognition, family considerations, and officer-survival principles.
