Build the knowledge and confidence to lead a municipal building department with the CBO Training Program, a new four-part workshop series launching this winter. Designed for current and aspiring Chief Building Officials (CBOs) and building department supervisors, this practical course explores the statutory authority, accountability and management responsibilities of the CBO role. You’ll examine how to make sound decisions, maintain statutory independence and work effectively with municipal administration and council.

Across four online sessions, you’ll explore permit and inspection oversight, team leadership, staff development and customer service. You’ll also learn practical approaches to writing building bylaws, conducting permit fee studies, budgeting, policies, procedures and reporting. Discussion of records, technology, risk, and enforcement oversight will help you identify ways to strengthen your department’s operations. Realistic group activities will challenge you to clarify decision-making authority, plan a capable team, develop a building bylaw amendment and respond to a high-profile project under political pressure.

Delivered over four weekly half-day morning sessions, the series provides 12 hours of instruction. You’ll leave better prepared to lead your team, communicate difficult decisions and deliver responsive service while fulfilling your statutory responsibilities.
