AMI - ADAPTIVE MUSIC for INCLUSION: In-Person Workshop, Part 1

Course Prerequisite:
Total Beginner Uke or Guitar, or Above

DATE: January 16, 2027

TIME: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

LOCATION: San Diego Education Association, 10393 San Diego Mission Rd # 100, San Diego, CA

This workshop is open to any GITC participant working with students with IEPs or 504 plans, or who present with support needs but have not been officially identified.

We will help you learn to integrate music into the way you organize, guide, teach, and support your students with processing, sensory, physical, medical, behavioral, emotional, and/or cognitive support needs.

If you can take a Total Beginner Uke workshop before participating in this workshop, or if you already play uke or guitar, you will get the most out of this workshop. Our free classes will be offered online in November. Please visit guitarsintheclassroom.org to learn more.

AMI will teach you ways of making music a part of daily greetings, transitions, activities, and subject area teaching. Whether you are a general or special educator, a resource specialist, therapist, or PIF/para, this workshop is for you. Learn how to  :
  • Set up your learning environment for full inclusion
  • Utilize resources at school for learning about and teaching students with complex support needs.
  • Facilitate short musical activities to improve well-being and readiness to learn.
  • Sing, play, teach, and write songs with strategies for improving student social-emotional learning through music
  • Employ adaptive techniques, tools and physical supports
  • Integrate musical cues and songs that keep students calm, focused, and fully engaged throughout the day.
  • Facilitate collaborative songwriting to establish belonging, student validation, expression, and agency
We’ll build the workshop around the students you are teaching! Instruction will be focused on making musical experiences valuable on multiple levels.
