Itajime Shibori: Blocks, Bindings & Indigo with Suzanne Connors
Itajime Shibori: Blocks, Bindings & Indigo
A One-Day Workshop with Suzanne Connors
Explore the striking geometric patterns of itajime shibori, a traditional Japanese technique that uses folded cloth, wooden blocks, and pressure to resist dye. Working with indigo, you’ll discover how simple changes in folding, block placement, and binding create a wide range of designs.
We’ll begin with accordion folds, then explore square and triangular configurations. You’ll use wooden blocks, clamps, and bindings to control the resist, experimenting with exposed edges, spacing, and repeated dipping to develop patterns and shades of blue.
Throughout the day, Suzanne will guide you in achieving crisp patterns while leaving room for experimentation and unexpected results. You’ll create a collection of samples to inspire future work in quilting, wearable art, or home décor.
You’ll learn to:
  • Fold cloth accurately for square and triangular patterns.
  • Position blocks and secure them with clamps or bindings.
  • Adjust pressure and dye exposure to vary your designs.
  • Dip, oxidize, and repeat to build indigo color.
  • Unfold, rinse, and evaluate your finished patterns.
Level: All levels welcome; no previous shibori experience required.
Length: One day.
Materials: 3 pc Tenugi-sized sample cloth, wooden blocks, clamps, bindings, and a prepared indigo vat will be available for classroom use. Optional additional fabric or scarves may be offered for purchase.
Bring: An apron, long waterproof gloves, and clothes and shoes that can get stained.
You may bring additional natural fiber scarves or fabric (use is time permitting)
Come ready to fold, bind, dip—and discover the possibilities hidden within a piece of cloth.
