NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home

Personal protection outside your home begins with awareness, preparation, and sound decision-making. The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home course helps experienced handgun owners develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to avoid dangerous confrontations and responsibly use a concealed pistol for lawful self-defense.

At Not Today Self-Defense & Firearms Training, we provide serious training with approachable instruction. Through classroom learning and supervised range practice, students build on their existing foundation while examining the responsibilities that accompany carrying a firearm in everyday life.

Course Focus

• Recognizing and avoiding dangerous confrontations.
• Developing a responsible personal-protection mindset.
• Understanding safe concealed-carry practices.
• Examining legal concepts related to armed self-defense.
• Building safe and effective defensive pistol skills.

Course Format

The NRA curriculum includes two levels:

• Level One: Nine hours of classroom and range instruction, with approximately 100 rounds fired.
• Level Two: An additional five hours of range instruction focused on advanced shooting skills, with approximately 115 rounds fired.

These are minimum requirements. Review the event details to confirm which level or combination of levels is included in your registration and the ammunition quantity to bring.

Prerequisites

Participants must be adults legally eligible to possess firearms and have the defensive pistol knowledge, skills, and safety habits taught in NRA Personal Protection In the Home.

Eligibility may be demonstrated through an NRA Personal Protection In the Home course completion certificate or by successfully completing a pre-course evaluation. Contact us before registering if you need an evaluation.

Materials and Completion

Students receive the NRA course handbook and Gun Safety Rules brochure. Appropriate course completion certificates are awarded upon successful completion of the applicable level’s requirements.
