Kete Kono for Beginners

Kete Kono for Beginners

  • Wednesdays for 4 weeks
  • 21 October - 11 November
  • 10.00am -12.30pm
Discover the art of traditional Māori weaving in this welcoming four-week beginner course. Guided through each step of the process, you'll learn how to prepare harakeke (flax), create and store your own whenu, and weave a beautiful kete kono (four-corner basket).
Beginning with karakia and whakawhanaungatanga, participants will build confidence in foundational raranga techniques, including laying whenu, forming corners, weaving sides, and finishing and locking off their kete. As your skills develop, you'll have the opportunity to create additional kete kono or a matching lid.
This hands-on course is ideal for beginners wanting to connect with te ao Māori, learn practical weaving skills, and enjoy creating in a supportive and social environment.
You'll learn:
  • Harakeke preparation and whenu making
  • Traditional kete kono weaving techniques
  • Forming corners and shaping your basket
  • Finishing and locking off your work
  • Caring for and storing weaving materials
No prior weaving experience is required.
Tools are available to use, and participants are encouraged to bring a plate of kai to share.
Nau mai, haere mai.
