Electricity Merit Badge

Course Information & Permission Slip

Welcome to the Electricity Merit Badge session! Scouts will engage in hands-on learning to understand

electrical principles, safely construct and diagram circuits, and explore residential power systems. Please

read the information below and bring a signed permission slip to our meeting.

Course Schedule

1. PRE-WORK (To be completed BEFORE our session)

● Requirement 11: Explore a career in electricity. Find one that interests you and come prepared to

discuss it with the group!

2. IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES (What we will cover together)

● Requirements 1, 3-6, 9, 10: We will have interactive discussions and hands-on demonstrations

covering electrical terminology, AC/DC power generation, building an electromagnet, drawing

simple circuits, breaker box safety and emergency responses, and wiring simple, series, and

parallel circuits.

3. HOMEWORK (To be completed AFTER our session)

● Requirement 2: Complete an electrical safety inspection of your home with a parent or guardian

using a checklist.

● Requirement 7: Draw a floor plan of your bedroom showing the locations of lights, switches, and

outlets.

● Requirement 8: Read your home power meter and review a recent electric bill with a parent or

guardian to understand your household's power consumption.

Parent/Guardian Permission

The Electricity merit badge requires Scouts to conduct an electrical inspection of their home and review

household utility bills. By signing below, you grant permission for your Scout to complete the following

requirements under your supervision. Your Scout must bring this signed form with them to participate in

the merit badge.

● (Req 2) Complete an electrical safety inspection of your home with a parent or guardian.

● (Req 8) Sit down with your parent or guardian to review a recent electric bill.
