Intro to Creative Writing: Five Weeks, Four Genres

Five weeks. Four genres. A Little Truth. A Little Make-Believe.

Join Cindy for an exploration of creative writing in its various forms. Capture a memory, invent a character, write a poem, or craft a dramatic monologue meant only for your cat. You get to try them all!

Our small group offers a welcoming space to tell your stories and play with language. No critique circles. No pressure to impress. Only Cindy offers feedback, and that feedback will be warm, supportive, and focused on encouraging you, not picking your words apart. Your kindred writers listen, share, and learn alongside you.

Each week, we’ll read short excerpts, write on the spot, and have opportunities to share; fresh ink, loose ends, and all.

What to Expect:

  • Week 1: Creative nonfiction. Real life: often stranger than anything you could invent.
  • Week 2: Fiction. Make things up. Give someone a problem. See what happens.
  • Week 3: Poetry. Learn strategies to express a moment, feeling, or situation.
  • Week 4: Drama (monologue). Let someone have their say. Could be poetry; could be speech!
  • Week 5: The encore. Share a favorite piece from the previous four weeks and celebrate what you’ve created.

Our small group will focus on play and experimentation, not perfection.

Everyone welcome. Every story welcome.

You don’t need an extraordinary life, a dramatic plot twist, or a writing résumé. Everyday moments, big adventures, quiet truths, wildly invented tales all make for wonderful stories.

New to writing? Welcome. Been writing for years but feeling a little stuck? Welcome, too. Come as you are, bring something to write with, and let curiosity take it from there.

What students have to say:
The method really gets me writing and connecting with fellow writers. I love it! --Sarah L.
I always love being in Cindy’s classes. She creates an amazing, safe space for writers to express themselves and her prompts lead us to write in directions we would not have taken on our own. --Brooke D.
The world is on fire and this workshop gave me hope while reminding me I’m not alone. --Sam B.
