From Fiber to Form: Create a Felted Vessel

Join artist Jamie Mathiasen of Ravensong Felt for a fun, beginner-friendly workshop where you’ll felt your own vessel!

Wet felting is one of the oldest textile arts, born of water, fiber, and the steady rhythm of hands working in circle. Wet felting is a fiber-art process that transforms loose wool fibers (roving) into a strong, seamless textile. Participants will learn the basics of wet felting while creating a unique vessel to take home.

You will learn:

  • How to lay out wool to begin your piece
  • Foundational wet felting techniques
  • How to use a resist to create a 3D form
  • How to shape a felted vessel 6.5" - 7" in diameter

About the Instructor:

Jamie Mathiasen is the artist behind Ravensong Felt, creating myth‑inspired, hand‑felted vessels and fiber art in her Calgary‑area studio. She has a deep love for the process, through water, pressure, patience, and time, something emerges that did not exist before. A form takes shape. A story reveals itself. Through fiber, she continues the work she has always loved: helping stories take shape and giving form to what has long been waiting to emerge.

Common Questions

Minimum age / Can I register my child for this class?

The participant must be at minimum 16 years old to be registered and must have an adult registered in the same class. Our instruction is centred around teaching adults. If a minor is less developed than an adult, they may find our instruction methods and pace challenging. We do not guarantee any accommodation of instruction geared to minors.

Workshop is a mature environment where there are very hot kilns in unrestricted production areas; mature art that can contain challenging matters such as profanity, nudity, and mature & challenging subjects; responsible consumption of legal substances such as alcohol in both common areas and private studios, and marijuana outdoors; and lively discussion that is not censored for young ears. By registering a minor, you are agreeing to the risks and environment that they will be entering. If you are registering as a minor, you confirm that a guardian has reviewed this warning and has consented to you registering.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that you can move easily in.

Cleanup

Classrooms must be left in a clean condition. Students are responsible for following Workshop’s cleaning protocols which are as follows: tables cleaned, floor cleaned up and mopped, tools put away, and laundry placed in basket.

Clean-up should be done with a wet sponge or a mop. Avoid sweeping in the studio as it will cause dust particles to become airborne.
