Elemental Studios

Raku Fire: Elements of Transformation

On December 5, from 3–7 PM, we'll bring together the pots made during our Raku Making sessions and put them through the Raku firing process. We'll get to watch the transformations that happen through heat, flame, smoke, oxidation, and reduction, and see the often surprising surfaces that emerge with different materials, glazes and treatments.

Ceramics has been transformative in my own life from my first class and onward. I didn't recognize it right away, but as I got deeper into the art and science of ceramics, and deeper into the accepting and nurturing community, I started noticing the changes happening within me as I shaped and transformed the clay. I started Elemental Studios to share some of that experience with others.

During our time together, we'll explore the many ways clay and glaze transform, and consider how transformation connects to our own development. Change and growth aren't always easy, but they don't have to come from pushing ourselves harder or being critical of who we are. Mindfulness, self-awareness, self-compassion, and curiosity can help us recognize what's happening within us and make room for something new. There will be meaningful conversation, plenty of experimentation, and hopefully a good dose of playfulness, wonder, and appreciation for all the ways things can change.

Notes:

• Each participant will be able to fire about four or five pieces about the size of a typical mug
• However, don't fire a mug you want to drink out of. Rakuware is not food safe!
• Raku involves smoke and fire. Safety is our primary focus. Wear long sleeves, long pants and close toed shoes made of non-synthetic materials. You don't have to get close to the fire, but this dress is critical if you want to be involved in unloading the kiln or reduction chamber.
