Beginner Winter Hiking Series
Do you want to start winter hiking? Maybe you have some reservations because it's intimidating. If this sounds like you, consider joining ADK's Beginner Winter Hiking Series! In this program, we'll cover how to plan and prepare for winter hiking. This includes how to build a layering system, pack, fuel your body, and Leave No Trace in the coldest season. We will also discuss snowshoes and snowshoeing techniques for different types of terrain and trail conditions. Over the course of 3 weeks, we will practice using these skills on 3 progressive hikes.
In week 1, we will meet at ADK's Education Yurt for a classroom session in the morning covering a variety of winter hiking preparedness topics. After lunch, we will set out on an introductory snowshoe hike to Marcy Dam. This hike will be 4.6 miles on mild terrain.
In week 2, we will meet again at ADK's Education Yurt to review content and questions. Afterwards, we will set off to hike our first mountain of the series - Mount Jo (elevation 2,876'). This hike is 2.6 miles round-trip with 754' of elevation gain.
In week 3, we will meet at the Hurricane Mountain pull-off parking area on Route 9N for our biggest winter hike. Hurricane Mountain (elevation 3694') is a 6.8 mile hike round-trip with 2000' of elevation gain.
This program is designed for individuals new to winter hiking and no previous winter hiking experience is necessary. However, prior summer hiking experience is highly recommended. Please review our Essential Eligibility Criteria to understand the fundamental requirements for joining an ADK trip. ADK reserves the right to deny participation if group safety will be compromised through an individual's participation. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must.
This program will be led by one of ADK's educators, who is a licensed New York State guide and a member of ADK's professional guide staff. Participants ages 12 and up are welcome to attend. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) welcomes people of all backgrounds and is committed to fostering a safe space for everyone to learn.
