By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Describe how hyperuricemia leads to gout, and tell an acute gout flare apart from other causes of a hot, swollen joint, including septic arthritis.
2. Summarize current management of gout flares and the treat-to-target approach to long-term urate-lowering therapy.
3. Apply patient education strategies that support medication adherence and address diet, lifestyle, and common comorbidities such as cardiovascular and kidney disease.
4. Identify the allied health role in exercise, joint protection, and function during and between flares, and recognize when to refer for medical review.
