Defensive Shooting Essentials
Defensive Shooting Essentials
The four skills that decide a defensive encounter — and the judgment to use them.
For shooters who can already handle a pistol safely and want their training to match the reason they bought the gun in the first place.
⚠️ This is a live-fire class. You must bring your own handgun, a holster, 450 rounds of factory ammunition, and eye and ear protection. Full gear list below.

🎯 By the end of this class, you will be able to:
- Get the gun out — a consistent draw from the holster that does not change when the pressure does
- Land the first shot — because whoever lands the first hit usually wins
- Be ready for the follow-up shot — gun back on target and trigger prepped before you decide whether you need it
- Make the shoot / no-shoot call — identify the threat before the gun comes out, and stop when the threat stops
- Move off the draw and still deliver a clean shot from a stable platform
- Know your match time, your fight time, and the gap between them — and start closing it
- Read your own target so you know exactly what to fix on your next range trip

📌 Course Overview
Most people bought a handgun for defense, then got pulled into shooting as a sport. Fast and accurate is a good thing. It is not the same thing as being ready. Knowing how to swing a hammer does not mean you can build a house.
Defensive Shooting Essentials is built around the short list of hard skills a civilian actually needs in a defensive encounter: get the gun out, land the first shot, be ready for the follow-up, and make the shoot / no-shoot decision — usually while moving off the draw. Almost everything else is in the weeds. Then we add the piece most training leaves out entirely: judgment.
You will shoot the core drills two ways. First on match time — as fast and accurate as you can run them. Then on fight time — the same drill, with a stop signal you have to honor. The difference between the two is your tax: how much you have to slow down to make a decision instead of just running mechanics. One round over the stop, or one hit outside the vital zone, is a fail, because in the real world that is an innocent person or a bad call. The goal of the day is to close that gap without ever failing.
Speed and judgment are trained separately; you cannot build both in the same rep. We confirm the mechanics first, then put the decision on top of them.
How the day runs:
- Standards warm-up — draw-one, draw-two, reload, and six-shot strings at three distances, then walk down and read your target before anyone tells you what it says
- Draw and first shot — your draw filmed in slow motion, consistency at every distance, and the elbow-driven draw that lands the same way every time
- Trigger and follow-up — trigger isolation work for shooters who flinch or throw flyers, and finishing every rep prepped and ready for the next shot
- Match time vs. fight time — six rounds up close on the timer, then the same drill with a stop beep; score your tax
- Turn-and-draw and threat / no-threat — head and eyes first, decide before the gun arrives, and partner-graded runs where touching the gun on a non-threat is a fail
- Movement off the draw — getting off the X and arriving planted so the shot is still clean

🔍 Who This Class Is For
- Concealed carriers whose range time is mostly standing still at 7 yards
- Pistol Essentials graduates ready for the defensive part
- Competition and practical shooters who are fast but have never trained the stop
- Church safety team members and anyone who carries for other people
- Anyone who wants their skill to match their confidence
You should already be able to: safely load and unload your pistol, draw and holster safely, clear a basic malfunction, and keep your muzzle and trigger finger where they belong without being reminded. Not there yet? Start with Pistol Essentials, then come back and take this one.
🧰 What to Bring
- Handgun — modern, reliable and serviceable. Your equipment has to be 100%: one malfunction and “my gun might not run” lives in the back of your head for the rest of the day
- Strong-side OWB or IWB holster and a sturdy gun belt — this is a draw class, so a holster is required, not optional
- 3 or more magazines
- 450 rounds of factory ammunition
- Eye and ear protection (electronic hearing protection recommended)
- Closed-toe shoes and a baseball hat
- A phone with a camera — we will film your draw and send it home with you
- Note-taking materials (recommended)
- Food, snacks and water — it’s a full day on the range

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any prior experience? Yes. You should already be safe and competent handling a handgun, including drawing from a holster. This is not a beginner class. If you are new to handguns, start with Pistol Essentials first — you will get far more out of this one.
Will there be live fire? Yes. The class combines live fire, dry fire and short lecture blocks, all outdoors.
Is this a competition class? No. We borrow the timer and the scoring from practical shooting because they are honest and they expose everything. The standard we hold you to is defensive: identify before you draw, and stop when the threat stops.
Will I shoot on the move? You will move off the draw and learn to arrive planted so the shot is still clean. This is not a full movement course — that comes later in the path.
What type of gun can I bring? Any modern, reliable, serviceable handgun. Iron sights or a red dot are both fine.
What's the next step after this class? Next Level Pistol to push your speed and control further, and Real-World CCW Scenarios to test your judgment against a living, breathing problem.
