Finding the Song." Empower your musical improv with a workshop on song-building. Starting with the fundamentals of song form, participants will learn to build songs in the moment, one phrase and section at a time. The workshop will progress from wordless vocalizing through hockets (songs sung one word at a time) through the blues and into popular and Broadway song forms, with many opportunities to sing alone and with others, culminating in an improvised musical.

Prerequisite: Participants should have completed one or more levels of improv training from any program anywhere

GUEST INSTRUCTORS (Yes, you get TWO)

Amy Milshtein and Mark Anderson began sharing their improv journeys shortly after they met in 2009. They are lifelong improvisers and musicians. Both are pro team players with Portland ComedySportz, a short-form troupe that performs weekly. They’ve also performed in long-form musicals across the Portland area. Amy’s focus is stage work, both as a performer and emcee, while Mark performs primarily as a music director.

When she is not improvising, Amy works as a free-lance writer. Mark recently retired from a 25 year career as an elementary school music educator. He has also worked as a United Methodist minister and church musician.

Amy and Mark are the parents of four adult children, and have one gifted, talented, and very funny grandchild. They will show you pictures of her even if you don’t ask to see them. They have one cat.

As teachers, Mark and Amy’s shared goals are to help their students come out of their shells and become confident musical improvisers.

1. Please note that our Come As You Are tiered pricing does not apply to special events led by guest instructors. As they travel to share their expertise with us, these specific workshops require a fixed registration fee. Thank you for understanding and supporting our visiting artists and teachers!
2. Workshops are subject to cancelation if minimum enrollment is not met.
3. No refunds are given on the day of the workshop.
4. We reserve the right to cancel a student's registration if they have a history of not fulfilling payment agreements.
5. Observation: Workshops are closed to outside observation unless explicitly approved by the facilitator to ensure a supportive and distraction-free environment for all participants.
