Backcountry Snowshoeing for Beginners is an introductory snowshoe program. This course covers a brief history of snowshoes, gear needs, winter hazards, and general backcountry preparation. After a morning of indoor discussion and presentation, we will head outside for an afternoon of practicing snowshoe techniques. No previous experience is necessary.
This course will be held at the Education Yurts beginning at 9:00am and ending around 3:00pm. Parking is included with this program and is available next to the Yurts. Please dress warm and be prepared for unpredictable weather. Snowshoes will be available to borrow upon request.
Participants should arrive prepared to learn and bring a writing utensil, lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. Be prepared to spend a portion of the afternoon outdoors. A gear list is provided with program registration. Please note that no meals or lodging are provided with program registration. For questions about meals and lodging, or to reserve lodging at the Adirondak Loj, please call the Loj Front Desk at (518) 523-3441 or book online here. ADK members receive a 10% discount on programs and lodging.
This program will be led by one of ADK's educators, who is a licensed New York State guide and a member of ADK's professional guide staff. Participants ages 12 and up are welcome to attend. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
