Beyond Traditional Exams/Essays: Building Variety into Your Assessment Plan
Whether as a response to AI, as a move towards a more universally designed course, or simply a desire to refresh your teaching, there are many good reasons to think beyond traditional exams and essays when designing the assessment plan for your spring courses.
In this session, we’ll consider a variety of assessment methods – oral exams, group projects, assignment menus, and forward-looking assessments – and discuss the benefits and challenges of incorporating these different types of summative assessment into your teaching.
We hope participants will leave this session with a clearer sense of exactly what they want their students to learn, and an expansive list of all the different ways that students might be able to demonstrate that learning within the context of their courses.
