In Matt Bell’s book Refuse to Be Done: How to Write and Rewrite a Novel in Three Drafts, Bell encourages
rewriting instead of revision. The latter aligns itself more with copying and pasting, the former with
new efforts, words, strategies, and imaginations. In this four-week poetry workshop, we will generate
new work and embrace radical rewriting, exploring every angle, voice, and format of a poem’s
potential. The class structure will focus primarily on strategies for generating new work, revision
suggestions, and rewriting exercises. The last two classes will be solely devoted to workshopping one
another’s work.
