Dr. Sarah Lupo, Presenter

Dr. Lupo has been working with many teams this year to help us understand the best evidence-based supports in adolescent literacy instruction - including interventions. CVEDC is continuing our partnership with Dr. Lupo for FY24, by bringing her to Vermont for in-person events that are designed for MTSS and leadership teams, EST teams as well as interventionists and literacy educators that will focus on using proven successful teaching strategies to set-up adolescent students for success.

The Interventionist Cohort will provide monthly asynchronous modules and then follow-up virtual live sessions each month with Dr. Lupo. This comprehensive approach is exactly what our interventionists have asked for.

Day 1: Sept. 28, 2023 Supporting Students’ Disciplinary Literacy Skills: This session will develop participants' understanding of comprehension and vocabulary development, teach them how to administer formative comprehension assessments and develop quad text sets. It will include a brief session on analyzing texts and introduce participants to scaffolding comprehension.

Note: This is a focus on tier 1, but also all things that need to occur in an intervention setting.

Sarah Lupo is an Assistant Professor at James Madison Univ. who has extensive teaching experience as an ESL teacher, English teacher, reading specialist, and literacy coach in grades K-12 in Washington D.C., Istanbul, Turkey, Phoenix, AZ, and Charlottesville, VA. She has worked with many districts to support literacy instruction across Virginia and nationwide. Dr. Lupo has published dozens of articles and chapters in publications such as Reading Research Quarterly, Reading Teacher, Journal of Adult and Adolescent Literacy, and Literacy Today and recently co-authored a book on integrating content and literacy instruction. Her work strives to put theory into practice to position all learners as capable and bringing cultural and linguistic assets to the reading experience.
