This course is about astrophotography with DSLR/DSLM cameras and will cover the topic both from a theoretical/technical perspective as well as from a practitioner’s point of view. In the first part, the basics of astronomy are introduced gently together with some technical background on how a DSLR works. The second part of the course is focused on the practical side of astrophotography. Using example pictures (from the instructor and participants alike), we will discuss how to apply the previously introduced topics. The focus is mainly on wide-field imaging (e.g. landscapes with stars above, polar lights, milky way, …). Finally, a small outlook on deep-sky photography (galaxies, nebulas, star clusters) is given.

Participants should have a good knowledge about the technical aspects of a DSLR/DSLM (how a camera sensor works, what factors influence the noise, etc.). Ideally, they have taken the Digital Photography course.

Goals

The goal of the course is to give interested participants a good overview over the possibilities of astro photography. Most of the concepts presented in this course do not need specialized equipment but rather teach the participants how to best make use of their DSLR and lenses. For experts in the area who want to deepen their knowledge in deep-sky photography (e.g. OSC vs narrow-band imaging, Stacking, …) this course might be too basic.

Der Kursleiter hatte enorm viel Ahnung vom Thema und konnte das auch sehr gut weitergeben. Im Kurs habe ich äussert viele interessante und nützliche Sachen über die Astrofotografie gelernt, für die man selbst viel Zeit investieren müsste um sie rauszufinden. 5/5

Der Kurs hat eine Sehr gute Einführung in die Astrofotografie gegeben. Ich habe Lust bekommen, mit Weitwinkel Sternenfotographien zu experimentieren. Der Kursleiter konnte meine Fragen kompetent beantworten und vermittelte uns das benötigte technische Verständnis. Ich war erstaunt, wie Technisch die Astrofotografie ist. Der Kurs ging sehr ins Detail, was mir gefallen hat, was aber sicher nicht für alle ist. es ist definitiv ein Level 3 Kurs. Mir hat es aber sehr spass gemacht mir Gedanken zu machen, was für eine Auswirkung die Winkelgeschwindigkeit eines Sterns und die Kamera Optik auf das Bild haben. Auch die Funktionsweise des ISO wertes und die Wirkung von ISO auf den Dynamikbereich haben mich fasziniert. Bei der Deep Sky Fotografie war ich sehr überrascht, wie hoch der Aufwand für ein Bild ist und auch was an Ausrüstung vorausgesetzt wird. Ich fand es einen sehr spannenden Exkurs, das Wissen hat mich fasziniert. Ich denke, ich werde das aber eher nicht umsetzen, da ich das Thema zwar spannend finde, aber ich doch zu wenig Motivation habe für ein Bild die Ganze Nacht in der Kälte zu stehen. Der Kurs war sehr spannend und interaktiv. Technisches Interesse ist aber vorausgesetzt. 5/5

I really like the astro course by Leonard. At the beginning (even pre-course) when looking at the slide I was a bit worried that it starts really on a low level, but I think esp. for photographers which do that for years, all the parameters and especially how you compute them as it is a very technical discipline it was really helpful. A small remark from my side would be in the beginning for the celestial mechanics part having some illustrations directly relating to the earth could help in the understanding of the different angles and planes.
I really like the technical part about the estimation of ISO/exposure time and the mathematical foundation and also Leonard has a really broad knowledge for even off-topic questions! and even some slide to show for this ;D [ … ] Big thanks also again to Leonard for this really good preparation and slide, showing his passion and interest in his really professional hobby! 5/5
