This course focuses on a key historical period rich in artistic upheavals and inventions. We will focus particularly on the affirmation of the artist's individuality, and the great pictorial movements that marked the history of French painting. We will begin our study with Neoclassicism, and, more particularly, with the work of Jacques Louis David (1748 – 1825) official painter of the Revolutionary period, and subsequently, the Empire. The course will end with Post-Impressionism, represented by strong personalities such as Cézanne and Van Gogh, whose contributions paved the way to the birth of modern art at the beginning of the next century.

The socio-political context will constitute essential data for the understanding and appreciation of the artists and works studied. Weekly visits to museums including the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Musée Gustave Moreau, and Musée de l'Orangerie, will reinforce these sessions.

Due to scheduling conflicts, in case of a waiting list, priority enrollment for this section will be given to students planning to enroll in The Age of Enlightenment and/or Political Life in France courses.
