Three years into the generative AI era, higher education is no longer asking whether AI matters for learning, but how it is reshaping the ways students inquire, think, and create. This talk offers a concise, research-informed snapshot of where we are now and the patterns emerging across classrooms and disciplines.

Drawing on UC Berkeley Professor Greg Niemeyer’s Minus/Plus/Times AI framework and his learning equation (C = Q × T × K), the session will show how AI is influencing learning by shaping the questions students pose, the confidence and engagement they bring to their work, and the sources they use to build understanding. We’ll explore when to limit AI, when to use it transparently, and when AI begins to reorganize the learning environment itself.
