ESS.EES.2.2 Analyze and interpret data to predict locations of volcanoes and earthquakes based on plate boundaries.

ESS.EES.2.3 Use a model to explain how plate tectonics influence topography.

We’ll work through a geographic exercise, all or part of which may be useful to you in the classroom. On an 11” X 17” map of the world you will plot and label the features described below. Besides diagrams in the readings available on my ECU CANVAS page, I’ll suggest and display websites that will be helpful. By compiling the locations of earthquakes, trenches, subduction zones, seamount chains, faults, rift zones, mountain ranges, etc. you ‘ll see how students will able to grasp the relationship of these features with oceans, continents, and the three types of plate boundaries. I’ll provide a detailed key for the exercise so you can see the best way to draw features on your map. A suggested grading rubric for this exercise will also be provided. You will find certain websites especially useful because, not only do they have useful maps but, you can browse through these sites and find good explanations of plate-tectonic concepts. You can also use Google Images and search for maps of the features.
