Overview

This course is for students who have completed the Adult First Aid/CPR/AED, Adult Child and Baby First Aid/CPR/AED, or Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED online course within the last 90 days. The online course is not included in this course enrollment and must be completed prior to the in-person session.

Upon successful completion students will receive a valid 2 year Red Cross digital certificate that is OSHA compliant and meets other workplace and regulatory requirements.

Prerequisites

Requires the completion of the appropriate Online Class as outlined above before the in-person class.
NOTE: Students who completed the adult ONLY First Aid/CPR/AED online class are also eligible for this skills session.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

Understand the important role a lay responder plays in an emergency.
Describe how to recognize a potentially life-threatening emergency and gain confidence to act.
Explain how to lower the risk for infection when giving care.
Describe the emergency action steps: CHECK—CALL—CARE.
Explain how to check a person who appears to be unresponsive.
Explain how to check a responsive injured or ill person.
Identify when it is necessary to call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency number.
Understand the difference between heart attack and cardiac arrest recognition and care.
Demonstrate high-quality CPR and use of an AED for a person who is in cardiac arrest.
Demonstrate first aid care for a person who is choking.
Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, specific potentially lifethreatening sudden illnesses, including asthma attack, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergency, sickle cell crisis, seizures, opioid overdose, shock and stroke.
Demonstrate the application of direct pressure to control life-threatening bleeding.
Explain when a manufactured tourniquet should be used and describe the basic principles of using a tourniquet.
Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following injuries and environmental emergencies: burns; head, neck and spinal injuries (including concussion); exertional hyperthermia/heat stroke, hypothermia and poison exposure.

Target Audience: Lay responders in the workplace and community.
Modes of instruction: Instructor-led; requires completion of online class prior to in-person session.
