IGC 685: Using SEI, ESL, & SPED Strategies & Best Practices to Build Curriculum for English Language Learners (ELLs): Part 2

Format: This is an online course. All coursework is completed asynchronously. This is a one-week intensive. And entire graduate class will be completed in one week, so please allow ample time for coursework throughout the week.

Please Note: This course may be used for the 15 SEI and the 15 SpEd PDPs required for recertification (plus an additional 37.5 PDPs toward electives). Please note this is not a SEI Endorsement course.

Pre-requisite: IGC625 - you must have taken Using SEI, ESL, & SPED Strategies & Best Practices to Build Curriculum for English Language Learners previously. This course is Part 2.

Course Description: Building on the strategies taught in Part 1, this course is designed to provide teachers advanced skills to effectively design differentiated content-area instruction to address students’ varied linguistic needs. Teachers will understand how to use the World Class Instructional Design (WIDA) as a tool to build curriculum objectives, as well as adjust instruction to scaffold students’ levels of language proficiency. Using SEI, ESL, and SPED best practices, teachers will build instruction that encompasses each aspect of the lesson plan including: preparation, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice and application, delivery, and assessment. Teachers will reflect on the four language domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and understand fundamental principles regarding language development in order to support the academic success of all students. This class is aligned to the Massachusetts State Frameworks.
