Senior Art: Adventures in Black and White (Charcoal)

Discover the expressive possibilities of charcoal in this engaging drawing class focused on portraits and still lifes. Students will explore foundational charcoal techniques, including shading, blending, texture, line, contrast, and value. Through careful observation, participants will learn how to identify and create a range of light and dark values to capture form, depth, and dimension. Whether drawing a portrait or a carefully arranged still life, students will build confidence, strengthen their observational skills, and discover the versatility and expressive nature of charcoal.

Instructor: Aaron Hexom

Growing up in rural North Dakota, Aaron spent a majority of his time creating art. It remained an informal pastime until he moved to Seattle, where he took a more academic approach to his work. Through studying at Gage Academy of Fine Art, Aaron familiarized himself with more traditional methods of drawing and painting. To further his education, he moved to New York City to earn an MFA at the New York Academy of Art while taking courses at Grand Central Academy. Since graduating, he has produced and sold work through solo and group shows. He continues to create work while living in Great Falls, Montana.
