This month we will explore the various ways to paint water both still and moving including waves. We will meet in a Zoom meeting room on Monday mornings ( not a Facebook room.). Instructions for joining Zoom will be sent to each student the Sunday prior to class. There we will discuss the various aspects of painting water and as the month goes on students will have an opportunity to share their successes and challenges and I will answer questions that come up. All reference photos AND painting demonstration videos will be posted in a private Facebook group set up specifically for this month’s class. I will attempt to post all the lessons early in the month so students can work at their own pace. This also allows someone to join our class mid way into the month. All the videos will be available for viewing for the month of January and all of February. Since all the lessons are provided early, students must register for the entire month of lessons.

Colored pencil like any other medium starts with technique and patience, as it is a building process of blending many layers of a combination of colors. We will begin with simple subjects. For the first few lessons you will not have to decide what you want to create, as that will be supplied for you. If you have never used colored pencil I know you will love it and enjoy the learning process. As I have learned over the years there is always more to learn for those of you who have experience in this medium. Plan on taking the class over a period of time as it is a building process.

Over the duration of 4 weeks, students will practice painting liquid and glass! Students will be taught multiple ways to begin the initial drawing on canvas. Video demonstrations and reference images will be provided ahead of time so students can work at their own pace.

The class will be tailored individually to student’s needs. Students will have opportunities each class to share their successes and challenges and have one on one support from the teacher. Students are encouraged to enjoy the process and paint in their preferred style. All levels are welcome!

Each month that follows, we will delve into other areas: landscape, seascape and portrait painting.
A student can expect to explore his or her own artistic voice through the principles of light and color and receive instruction via Zoom demonstrations, which allow interactive learning and exploration. The class is open to all: beginner, intermediate, or advanced, with or without tech skills (we will learn together). The goal is to learn to paint in oils in a variety of genres, and of course, to have fun!

If you’re brand-new to art, you may not know right away which art medium you’d like to try first. That’s okay! There are endless ways to make art, which means that there are endless art materials to choose from. You can always start with the basic tools: a piece of paper and a pencil.
The main thing is that you just get started and have a lot of fun.
This course is an introduction to materials and techniques for the beginning artist in all of us.
Students will see, hear and more importantly USE art tools, art supports, and different mediums (pencils, pastels, acrylics and oils).

Learn how to paint wave action in the watercolor workshop “Making Waves” with Catherine Hearding. Students will learn how to create a sense of texture and movement in water, by using shapes and values. A three-step process simplifies the subject to its basic components and gives students a pathway through the painting process. Value studies and color solutions for water will be explored, as students create a painting full of color and movement.
