USCCA Non-Lethal Self-Defense: Introduction to Byrna Less-Lethal Pistols
USCCA Non-Lethal Self-Defense: Introduction to Byrna Less-Lethal Pistols
Looking for practical personal-protection options beyond traditional firearms? This welcoming, hands-on course introduces the Byrna less-lethal pistol as part of a broader non-lethal self-defense plan.
Designed for new owners, curious first-time students, and anyone who wants to better understand their options, this course combines the fundamentals of safe Byrna operation with the decision-making skills that matter before, during, and after a potential self-defense encounter. You do not need prior firearms experience to attend.
Students will learn how less-lethal tools can fit into a layered personal-safety strategy, including awareness, avoidance, communication, distance management, and responsible deployment. The goal is not simply to learn how the device works—it is to build the confidence to make informed, responsible choices.
In this course, you will learn:
- What Byrna less-lethal pistols are, how they work, and where they may fit within a personal-protection plan
- The components, controls, features, and safe operation of the Byrna platform
- Available projectile options, their intended uses, and considerations for selecting the appropriate option
- Safe handling, loading, unloading, storage, maintenance, and transport practices
- Foundational shooting skills, including grip, stance, sight use, trigger control, and follow-through
- How to think through personal-safety situations using awareness, communication, movement, and distance
- When a less-lethal option may be appropriate—and when it may not be
- Important legal and practical considerations surrounding the ownership and defensive use of less-lethal devices
This is a supportive, judgment-free learning environment where questions are encouraged. Students will have the opportunity to handle and use the equipment under instructor guidance while developing practical skills at a comfortable pace.
By the end of the course, you will have a solid foundation in Byrna operation, safe handling, and practical application. More importantly, you will leave with a clearer understanding of how a less-lethal tool can support a thoughtful, responsible approach to personal protection.

Important Note
Byrna less-lethal systems are not classified as firearms. In New York, they generally do not require a background check or permit to own, carry, or use; however, laws and local restrictions can change, and students are responsible for understanding the rules that apply where they live, travel, and carry. The minimum age to possess a device powered by spring, compressed air, or gas is 16 years old.
